Sonny Styles, Ohio State LB

February 07, 20261 min read

Strengths

Elite instincts across the board, but specifically in the run game.
Elite tackling technique and takes excellent angles.
High football IQ. The green dot for the Ohio State defense, makes defense adjustments in-game, and also shows the intelligence personally on a play-by-play basis.
Absolute freak of an athlete and plays with a high level of physicality.
Great in man coverage.
Shows good ability to get off of pulling guards in the second level.
Good stunt/blitz ability when called upon.

Concerns/Weaknesses

Not a good pass rusher when placed on the defensive line.
Pursuit overall is probably average when away from the ball.

Key Statistics / Notes
Total tackles: 82
Tackles for loss: 6.5
Tackle success rate: 97.8%
Sacks: 1
6 last year
INT + FF: 2
First two years at Ohio State he played Safety.

Summary

One of the easier evaluations in this class, as Styles is a lock-and-loaded blue chip player for me. This is a do it all linebacker, with his only actual hole in his game being a lack of urgency in pursuit away from the ball (which is something I like to see but is very minor). He does many things at an elite or high end level, and can play any LB role. Draft him.

With a natural tendency toward analysis and facts, scouting college players for the NFL became a love of AJ's during college, and a very time consuming hobby in adulthood.
